Epcot - Overview

Disney World's Epcot is one of 4 theme parks in the Walt Disney World Complex. Epcot is an abbreviation of "Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow". Epcot Center was constructed for an estimated $ 800 million to $ 1.4 billion and took three years to build (at the time the largest construction project on Earth).

Epcot Imagination pavilion

The theme park is dedicated to the celebration of human achievement and has two main areas, Future World and the World Showcase. Covering an area of over 300 acres, Epcot was the largest of the Disney parks until it was bested by the Animal Kingdom, over 500 acres, in 1998.

Disney Trivia : The location chosen for Epcot was a 550 acres site about two and a half miles from the Magic Kingdom. Construction began in 1979 with a budget of $600 million!

The attractions in this theme park are housed in a series of pavilions much like the world’s fairs in the 1900’s.
At the beginning of the park is Future World. This area is about science, and showcases new ideas and technology in the past, present and future. There are 8 pavilions that are separated by wide walkways and beautiful landscaping.

The attractions include Spaceship Earth, Innoventions, Universe of Energy, Mission: SPACE, Test Track, The Seas with Nemo and Friends, The Land and Imagination! All of these pavilions carry any combination of theatre events, rides, and/or hands on attractions. In Epcot if you walk from "Innovations West" towards "The Land" Pavilion, you may find a round shape on the ground which is surrounded by quotations from scientists. When you stand in this circle, you are in the geographical center of Walt Disney World.

As you head towards the world showcase you will pass Innovations Plaza. Unique to this area is a fountain so large, it can shoot water 150 feet in the air, within 30 feet of the top of Spaceship Earth. If all of the shooters were fired at once, there would be 2,000 gallons of water in the air at one time.

The World Showcase contains 11 countries that surround the World Showcase Lagoon. The countries represented include Mexico, Norway, China, Germany, Italy, the American Adventure, Japan, Morocco, France, the United Kingdom, and Canada. Each pavilion contains stores and restaurants from that specific country and is staffed by citizens from that country, on a 1 year contract with Disney!

The architecture and details that Disney has given to this area is extremely accurate for every country that is shown. The World Showcase is not to be missed, especially at night with the Epcot Fireworks. One of the largest and costly fireworks show is produced in the World Showcase Lagoon every night.

Disney Trivia : Epcot has two distinct areas, the World Showcase that celebrates 11 nations and encircles the 40 acre World Showcase Lagoon, and Future World a showcase of new ideas and technology.
