Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom - Overview

Tree of Life

Animal Kingdom was the fourth park built at Disney World. It opened on April 22, 1998, and it is the largest single Disney theme park in the world, covering more than 500 acres, which is five times the size of the Magic Kingdom. Guests enter a theme park, whose name is synonymous with “Notazoo!”, with attractions, Broadway themed shows, and hundreds of animals in “man made” natural settings. It is also the first Disney theme park to be themed entirely around animal conservation, a philosophy once pioneered by Walt Disney himself.

Animal Kingdom has 7 lands for you to explore.  As you enter the park, you will enter the "Oasis", a section of the park that has animal pens along its walkways.

"Africa" brings you to the village of Horambe and the entrance to Kilimanjaro Safaris, a safari based ride on the African Savannah.

"Asia" is home to Expedition Everest. This is one of the most exciting roller coasters you will ever ride on. Not only does it go forward, it goes backward also!

Festival of the Lion King is a show that is worthy of Broadway and can only be seen at "Camp Mickey". This is also an area that has character meet and greets all day long.

Disney Insider : AVATAR is coming to the Animal Kingdom! - Walt Disney Imagineers are currently in the design stage for AVATAR at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Walt Disney Parks and Resorts worldwide are joining forces with filmmaker James Cameron to bring the world of AVATAR to life creating themed lands that will give guests the opportunity to explore the mysterious universe of AVATAR first hand.

Prehistoric animals are the theme for "Dinoland USA",  as you search for dinosaur fossils  as well as riding “Dinosaur”, one of the most thrilling attractions in the Animal Kingdom.

"Discovery Island" is at the center of the park. Here lies the Tree of Life, a sculpted 14-story (145-foot-tall), 50-foot-wide artificial tree that serves as the cornerstone of the Animal Kingdom.

Finally there's "Rafiki’s Planet Watch". This is a conservation area, that has a hands on petting zoo as well as a research center.

The Animal Kingdom park houses over 1,500 animals that represent 300 types of species. This is the first park designed so guests have the feeling that there are no barriers between them and the animals.

Disney Imagineers spent years designing this park and every area shows the detail that was given to it. In 2010, the park hosted approximately 9.7 million guests, ranking it the fourth-most visited amusement park in the United States and seventh-most visited in the world.

Announced recently, is Avatar Land slated for 2016. Based on the hit movie by director James Cameron, Pandora is a world filled with creatures, animals, and an out of this world landscape, that will be recreated for this section of the Animal Kingdom.

We will keep you posted as this project escalates.
